MODELS OF INSTRUCTION

There are so many ways for teacher to teach their students to deliver the material. It is influenced by what the materials are and what method the teacher wants. After I got Principles of Effective Teaching Assessment (PETA) class, I knew about four kinds of model instruction. They are Direct Instruction, Lecture Discussion, Guided Discovery, and Group Interaction. Let’s know about them, one by one.
Direct Instruction is the method which is used for teaching skills and concept. It has the 6 characteristics ; Reviewing the previous materials, presenting new material with logical steps, providing guided practice, giving feedback, providing independent study, reviewing what students have learned. This model of instruction has strengthen and weakness. This model instruction’s strengthen is the concept is really clear because the teacher guide the students to introduce them about the new concept by practicing, so the teacher tried to involve the students to figure out the new concept. The weakness of this models instruction are the students will be more passive because the teacher really take the control of learning.
Lecture Discussion is the method which is used to teach by brief presentation with discussion between teacher and students. The steps in this models are introduction, presentation, comprehension monitoring, integration, the last one are reviewing and closure.
Guided Discovery is the method which is designed to encourage students to do cooperative learning. The steps of this method are introduction and review, the open-ended phase, the convergent phase, closure, and application.
Group Interaction is the method which is used to encourage the students study about something with discussing others naturally. The steps are introduce group work with the task, give the students’ group activity, seat the students based on their group, give time allocation for the group to finish the task, require the students to write everything that they have got, and monitor what they discuss.

I Learn From My Friends
According to my opinion, in previous meeting in PETA class, I have learned many things. We did a micro-teaching to practice about models of instruction.  One team did a micro-teaching while others were guessing what kind of models instruction that team used and also assess they and give them a score for many perspective like the opening, content, elaboration, media and technology they used.
Actually, I learned how to teach “the way to teach” and what are strengthen and the weakness of that team teaching. I also learn about how to grab the attention of the students. I think that it was the difficult part for me to grab the attention the student because most of my friend said that I am quite unattractive person when I am teaching.
I also feel difficult to erase my nervous when I am teaching because actually I do not know why I feel nervous but from previous micro-teaching I learn a lot from my friend about the style of their teaching . I also learn about the important thing such as we have to tell the objective of our subject in the beginning of the class. I agree about this because the students will understand like what the teacher expect from the teacher.

2nd Jounal Reflection - PETA - Aprillia Fitriyanti

2nd Session: Planning For Instruction

Everything must be planned well. By well-preparation, we hope that our goal can be achieved at the end. If you do well preparation, you have 80% successful on your hand, said my lecture. Even we have 20% to fail, we can measure and anticipate it with our preparation, so preparation is so important.  In preparation, we plan everything that we have to do or don’t, time allocation, what we need, the goal of our activity, how we do our planning in our activity etc. This preparation is also needed for our evaluation at next activity. We can learn from our previous experience such as the difficulties, troubles at techniques, etc.
Planning is also needed in education. As a teacher, we must prepare everything before we teach our students. We can use lesson plan as a preparation for us. In lesson plan, we plan many things relate about our students such as prior knowledge of students, instructional objectives, resources/ materials/ technology, instructional procedure, activities and assignment. By that lesson plan, we really hope that our class could effective at all.
In my PETA (Principles of Effective Teaching & Assessment) class, we watched a video about teaching and learning process. In that video, a teacher of elementary school, thought her students by doing experience with the object of learning. The teacher and her students are really excited of that. After discussing with my team, we think that this part, it is quite effective because this activity is meaningful, the student will remember because they see and touch it. In other hand, the teacher also do reading fairy tale and I think that part is quite ineffective because the students only listen the teacher’s story without interaction with teacher.
In my discussion, after watching the video, we have to concern about three things, such as opening, activities, and closing of the class, are they effective or not? And we also need give reason why it is effective or ineffective based on our discussion.  In opening the class, the teacher told the students what they are going to do. The activities, they do asking and answer, go to rambutans tree, and telling the fairy tale. At the end of the class, the teacher gives some life values for her students.
After that, we were given a piece of paper; we have to choose the activities are real or fiction. There are only two activities which are real.  Then, we continue my lecture presentation about students’ characteristic and behavior. I think that as next generation of teacher, we have to use the students a center of teaching and learning process and also the center of making lesson plan.  I also learned about bloom taxonomy, the steps are remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. If we can do a creation of our activity, it means that we achieve the highest of bloom taxonomy and hopefully, we also can do it to our students later on.
At the end of PETA class, my team and I got an assignment to make a lesson plan based on standard of competency which we have chosen.  I think it is quite difficult because I never make a lesson plan before but I will give my best to do it with my team. Keep spirit…..

The first E-Reflection - PETA class

Today is my first day in Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment (PETA) class. It was really awesome and I really enjoy in this class. The most important thing is, I have a new lecture, she has a long name but we can call her only with  Ine. We had a lot of things in the class like doing introduction with mention our name, hometown and the previous holiday. Everyone has different way to spend his/her holiday like getting lazy at home, doing private teaching, join with some organizations etc.
After that, Ms. Ine divided class into 5 groups for this whole semester. It makes us easy to work because with discussion we can share everything that we had in our brain. We discussed what effective teacher should have and how a teacher do effective teaching. We have to write it down at flip chart and do gallery work to see our friends' work. We will see the similarity and the differences about that.  The result of what we think about effective teacher are supportive, charming, patient, humble, punctual, discipline, consistent, have many ways to teach, have many experience in teaching, etc. Then, what we think about effective teaching are have many method in teaching, well-prepared, deal with students need in learning etc.
Ms. Ine asked us who has a dream to be a teacher and we give many respond of that, for example  me , when I was child, I always think that I must study everyday and the occupation which has relation with it is to be a teacher but I also have the other passion which to be a business woman because my previous education was accounting. I love teaching and business. The next question, Ms. Ine ask, who is our teacher that inspire us to be a teacher and the respond are the teacher so energetic, patient, caring, etc. Beside of that, there’s also students who doesn’t have the inspire teacher like me and Gratika. We didn’t have because, my previous teacher is very bossy who force me to apply a job not continue my study in teaching. Gratika’s teacher is not caring about her goal (to be a teacher).
We also write our expectation after getting this course on a piece of paper. If we have achieved our expectation, we can take it off from her. I hope that I can achieve everything that I have written there. My goals are I want to know more about assessment, I want to be a creative and innovative teacher in assessment, and I can find what my students need later on. Amiiinn
Before finishing the class, Ms. Ine distribute a questioner relates with SSE and our subject. I fill all question with all my heart because it review about a teacher and the graduate quality of SSE. I hope that I can graduate with all requirement I must do.
I think that in this class, I get low stress environment in learning because I get comfortable with this class. I will do my best at all subject especially in this subject. I love PETA ....
